The majority of headlight lenses produced today are made of plastic and are very susceptible to road and weather conditions, harsh UV rays, chemicals from the engine and fumes, all take their toll on the plastic causing oxidisation and a breakdown from the outside in. The oxidised plastic can end up cracking, turning cloudy or yellow and generally looking old, worn and less than perfect. Once the oxidisation process sets in they quickly get worse reducing visibility by as much as 95 percent! That is a huge difference in whether you can effectively see or be seen when driving at night. It also makes your vehicle unsafe for driving in the dark and could even lead to an MOT failure.
